My paintings show sensitivity to the human body that I acquired while farming, relying daily on muscle and bone, which has brought a physical emphasis to the human figures in my paintings. I developed a keen love of the outdoors when walking and skiing, which inspired landscape paintings often on a very large scale in murals and folding screens. At the same time, I developed a visual language to reflect upon my inner experiences. The silhouette became a crucial element of that language. Recently I have arrived at a method using the silhouette for combining what has previously been two separate realities, two distinct painterly expressions, inner and outer. The challenge of painting the colors, forms, and composition in this dual interplay is complex and satisfying, with an enormous array of possibilities yet to explore.
